Hire an SEO Consultant in the UK: The Brief and the Checks
Hiring an SEO consultant in the UK works best when you write the brief before you take the calls. Define the problem, the internal resource available to implement, the timeframe and the budget. Then run six checks on each candidate: diagnosis quality, plain-language explanation, account ownership terms, reporting approach, stated refusals, and references you can actually contact.
Introduction
Most people start hiring an SEO consultant by taking calls. That is backwards. Without a written brief you end up comparing four different proposals for four different jobs, and picking whichever pitch was most confident.
I do this work, so read what follows with that in mind. The framework below is the one I would use to hire someone in my own position, and several of the checks in it are ones I would fail if I were sloppy.
The good news is that the whole process is short. A brief takes an hour, and six checks take about thirty minutes per candidate.
What should the brief contain?
An SEO consultant brief should state the business problem, the current state of the site and analytics, what internal resource exists to implement changes, the timeframe, the budget range, and what success would look like in business terms. Consultants who receive a real brief give sharper proposals, and the ones who ignore it disqualify themselves.
| Brief section | What to write |
|---|---|
| The problem | What is happening, in one paragraph, with dates |
| Current state | Platform, approximate page count, whether Search Console is set up |
| Previous work | What has been tried and by whom |
| Internal resource | Developers, writers, marketers available and how much time |
| Timeframe | When you need to see change and why |
| Budget range | An actual range, not "competitive" |
| Success definition | The business outcome, not a ranking position |
The internal resource row is the one that changes proposals most. A consultant working with an in-house developer and writer can recommend an entirely different plan from one working with nobody. Withholding budget helps nobody either, because it produces proposals scoped for a number you were never going to pay.
What are the six checks on each candidate?
Run six checks on any UK SEO consultant: the quality of their unprompted diagnosis, whether they explain technical issues in plain language, whether you retain ownership of all accounts, how they propose to report, what work they refuse to do, and whether references are contactable. Vague answers on ownership or refusals are the strongest negative signals.
| # | Check | Good answer | Bad answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Diagnosis | Names something specific and unflattering about your site | "Looks good, lots of potential" |
| 2 | Plain language | Explains indexation without jargon | Jargon with no translation |
| 3 | Ownership | You own everything, they get access | They set up accounts under their email |
| 4 | Reporting | Business outcomes, monthly, written | Platform metrics and a dashboard link |
| 5 | Refusals | Names work they will not do | "We can do whatever you need" |
| 6 | References | Two contactable clients | Logos and testimonials only |
Check 1: the unprompted diagnosis
Before any proposal, ask what is wrong with your site right now. A consultant who has spent twenty minutes in your Search Console and an incognito window should be able to name something concrete and slightly awkward. If they cannot, they either have not looked or are prioritising the sale.
Check 3: account ownership
Your Google Search Console property, Google Analytics property and Google Ads account must be created under an email address your business controls, with the consultant added as a user. This is the clause that costs people the most when they skip it, because Search Console history cannot be recovered after the fact.
Check 5: stated refusals
Ask what they will not do. Two answers should be automatic for anyone competent. Nobody can guarantee rankings, and Google's SEO Starter Guide confirms Google Search does not use the keywords meta tag, so any proposal including keyword meta optimisation is billing for something with no effect.
How do I judge SEO expertise without being an SEO?
Judge SEO expertise by whether the consultant can explain a technical concept clearly, whether their claims carry evidence, and whether they describe the limits of their own advice. Google's own guidance identifies trust as the most important component of content quality, and the same standard applies to a supplier.
Google's documentation on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content puts it directly: of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, trust is the most important, and the others contribute to it. That is a usable hiring standard, not just a content one.
Three practical tests:
- The explanation test. Ask why a page might be crawled but not indexed. A good answer distinguishes the two states and gives two or three plausible causes.
- The evidence test. For any claimed result, ask for the metric, the baseline, the period, the data source and what else changed in that window. A consultant who volunteers the last item is being honest with you.
- The limits test. Ask what SEO cannot fix for your business. Anyone who says nothing is overselling.
On the technical side, a consultant working on a modern JavaScript site should be able to describe how Googlebot handles it. Google's JavaScript SEO documentation sets out three phases, crawling, rendering and indexing, with pages queued for rendering that "may stay on this queue for a few seconds, but it can take longer than that". A consultant who does not know rendering is a separate queued step is not the right hire for a React or Vue site.
What should the engagement terms say?
An SEO consultancy engagement should specify committed senior hours per month, named first-month deliverables, reporting format and frequency, account ownership, notice period, and handover obligations. Consultants supply fewer total hours than agencies, so the hours figure is the most important number in the agreement.
| Term | Reasonable position |
|---|---|
| Committed senior hours | A stated number per month |
| First month deliverables | Named documents, not a summary call |
| Reporting | Written monthly report plus a call |
| Metrics reported | Business outcomes alongside search metrics |
| Account ownership | Client owns everything |
| Notice period | 30 days, either side |
| Handover | All documentation and access within 14 days |
| Availability | Response time and holiday cover arrangements |
That last row is the one specific to the consultant model. A single person has no bench, so agree in advance what happens during a two-week absence. It is a solvable problem and an unpleasant surprise if nobody raised it.
The wider comparison between hiring an individual and hiring a team, including how to compare the two on effective cost per senior hour, is in SEO consultant versus SEO agency.
What should you expect in the first ninety days?
Expect documents in the first thirty days, implementation in the second month, and measurable search movement by ninety days. A written technical audit, a keyword map and a prioritised roadmap should exist within a month. Rankings usually move later, but deliverables should not.
| Days | Deliverable | How you verify it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | Technical audit, keyword map, prioritised roadmap | You receive documents |
| 31 to 60 | Fixes implemented, key pages rewritten | Search Console coverage improving |
| 61 to 90 | Content published, internal links, structured data live | Rich Results Test passes, impressions rising |
Structured data belongs in that third row for a reason. Google's structured data documentation recommends JSON-LD as the easiest format to implement and maintain, and cites Rotten Tomatoes measuring a 25% higher clickthrough rate across 100,000 pages after adding markup. That is one publisher's result rather than a general promise, but markup is cheap to add and the mechanism is sound.
Where the consultant's work should point next depends on the diagnosis. If the blocker is crawling, rendering or site speed, that is technical SEO. If the site is technically sound but competing for the wrong things, that is advanced SEO strategy. If traffic arrives and does not convert, the problem is not acquisition at all, and conversion rate optimisation and analytics is the right first purchase.
Conclusion
Hiring an SEO consultant in the UK is straightforward once you write the brief first. State the problem, the resource you have, the timeframe and the budget, then run the six checks. Weight account ownership and stated refusals heavily, because those two predict how the relationship ends better than anything in a portfolio.
Do this today: open Google Search Console and check whose email address owns the property. Then write the one-paragraph problem statement at the top of your brief. Those two steps take fifteen minutes and will improve every conversation you have afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
What does an SEO consultant actually do?
An SEO consultant diagnoses why a site is underperforming in search, sets the strategy for fixing it, and either implements the changes or directs the people who will. Typical work includes technical audits, keyword and content strategy, internal linking, structured data, and training internal teams to maintain the work.
How do I know if an SEO consultant is any good before hiring?
Ask for an unprompted diagnosis of your site, ask them to explain a technical concept in plain language, ask what work they refuse to do, and ask for two contactable references. A consultant who names a specific problem with your site before being paid is demonstrating capability rather than describing it.
Should I hire an SEO consultant or train someone in-house?
Train in-house when you have sustained work and someone with the aptitude and time to learn. Hire a consultant when you need experienced diagnosis now, or when you want your in-house person guided by someone senior. The two combine well, since a consultant setting direction with internal execution is often the most cost-effective arrangement.
What should I prepare before the first call?
Prepare a one-paragraph problem statement with dates, details of your platform and approximate page count, access status for Google Search Console and Analytics, a summary of previous work, the internal resource available to implement, your timeframe and a real budget range. Proposals get sharper immediately.
How quickly should an SEO consultant produce results?
Expect documents within thirty days, implementation in the second month, and measurable search movement by ninety days. Impressions typically rise before clicks, and clicks before enquiries. If ninety days pass with no deliverables and no change in Search Console, the problem is the engagement rather than the timeline.
